Am timetabling this in. The thing I lack most at the moment is a good list and a schedule. Hopefully June will not pass me by without these.<br />
Anyway here's 4 to be going on with...<br />
<br />

The socks count as two!<br />
There's more...<br />

It's called <a href="http://wordsandpictures.org/" target="_blank">Words & Pictures</a> and it's the open newsletter of the <a href="http://scbwi.org/" target="_blank">Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators</a> British Isles.</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">My new job is doing a bit of research for an 20th anniversary programme about Video Nation. I'm so pleased to have caught up with all my <a href="http://www.dontcallmebetsy.com/2012/12/introducing-lucky-stars-block-of-month.html" target="_blank">lucky stars!</a> (So much so, I have chosen fabric for three version's of March's block.)</div>
<br />
When I started, I was new to this method of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bc1mU0LMF8" target="_blank">paper piecing</a>. It works really well and is so satisfying if a bit wasteful on fabric - the lucky stars method is to cut generous rectangles of fabric to cover the shapes rather than the scraps shown in the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Bc1mU0LMF8" target="_blank">youtube video</a>. I might have a go with scraps for March now I've got the hang of it. Also, this will give me more of an idea of how to get the fabric design positioned in the best way for the shape.<br />
<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">Here's December's</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">and February's</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBXlQ902G4_awCdwVxl6eLbBwAZsy6Bi-AQRdgGRPi_4hH2kgmS6o2SxCJc848V6KNbzeRekokG2nhZW9eMJkT0F0jmrzZCmZrbNjs_a-vfADKXnxYkeSDfbqvyFOBvo8JylX-BXtIvyE/s1600/feb+block.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBXlQ902G4_awCdwVxl6eLbBwAZsy6Bi-AQRdgGRPi_4hH2kgmS6o2SxCJc848V6KNbzeRekokG2nhZW9eMJkT0F0jmrzZCmZrbNjs_a-vfADKXnxYkeSDfbqvyFOBvo8JylX-BXtIvyE/s320/feb+block.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I should have used more contrasting fabric for January and definitely two different yellows for the centre, so I may well do that one again. December's my favourite, I like the centre and how the yellow pops out. I'm wondering if I can go more yellow than eau de nil/orange from now on.<br />
I'm going to count this as three makes possibly that's cheating as when I have twelve of these they will only contribute to one quilt but what the heck!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>So for a count up - 9 weeks into 2013 and I've made:</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>1 pair of trousers</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>3 cowls</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>1 t-shirt quilt</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>1 hat</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>1 shirt</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>and 3 lucky stars</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>that's </i><i>10/52</i><i> - yay, I'm ahead!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>

It was to make a shirt.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwNUMyW8rCxQHS9T9bIF4Ysexd6vm5KTN6zGqzSbKTBfoEfcqi84N4UVuiTlWel0zPYZB9Pa3UeMLXkEErNbUx6rMWnuOk7yJr7dCnLtVT0B7LKJCbnczpyzVu-JpqZ1u3_kArcQ3nBCg/s1600/shirt+pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwNUMyW8rCxQHS9T9bIF4Ysexd6vm5KTN6zGqzSbKTBfoEfcqi84N4UVuiTlWel0zPYZB9Pa3UeMLXkEErNbUx6rMWnuOk7yJr7dCnLtVT0B7LKJCbnczpyzVu-JpqZ1u3_kArcQ3nBCg/s320/shirt+pattern.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I bought the pattern before Christmas with some
ridiculous notion to make it for the OH <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">for</i>
Christmas. I think I just wrapped up the pattern and the intention.<br />
<o:p></o:p>
At the beginning of this month, February, trawling round the shops looking for an exciting shirt for his birthday
present, I found nothing shirt wise that wasn't dull dull dull. But I did
find this.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUL0nrSXNsGQ2vvPwDTLM0KzOF4XJK0et0jc1JKoTRMMLU9AB9b-4bmjHyBIwvh76ksASxiLDVKo1ofzdAstG_p6k6AwUvNVLddM3NDllGV-E0vq75az1BZJbhCmf8OU7tL4fq3jH5TgU/s1600/owl+fabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUL0nrSXNsGQ2vvPwDTLM0KzOF4XJK0et0jc1JKoTRMMLU9AB9b-4bmjHyBIwvh76ksASxiLDVKo1ofzdAstG_p6k6AwUvNVLddM3NDllGV-E0vq75az1BZJbhCmf8OU7tL4fq3jH5TgU/s320/owl+fabric.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
I had this</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp470PeF651akF8-cyk8MX05-BD1rpBr5m-iT3a4JL2nrrpQb8dtH_kA31JTAgvpUl-ZPySmk586-UMvX1jGl9jIcz6qHBnR3Kp48gU0rF0gL40ixJfO1-tI_cBzM5MOA5727YNH7Qkl0/s1600/shirt+contrast.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp470PeF651akF8-cyk8MX05-BD1rpBr5m-iT3a4JL2nrrpQb8dtH_kA31JTAgvpUl-ZPySmk586-UMvX1jGl9jIcz6qHBnR3Kp48gU0rF0gL40ixJfO1-tI_cBzM5MOA5727YNH7Qkl0/s320/shirt+contrast.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
and with 2 days to go thought, 'I'll make one!'<br />
The whole first series of <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b011whc9/episodes/guide" target="_blank">Case Histories</a> later I had a shirt with a standy up collar, cuffs, contrast and everything...
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmpkbXxzs7xnAq_VsCNgVwO64WxhId-lFAtXxvEWVA4hjKSqMAzEdj71nk3QMAn0SaHKWMtmmnnnVavImPkV7AIN2lCinaDiLyf0dDtrDtfDvawlyWtJwxx3gAi3cJVnZvsDA5hkxDPRY/s1600/shirt+collar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmpkbXxzs7xnAq_VsCNgVwO64WxhId-lFAtXxvEWVA4hjKSqMAzEdj71nk3QMAn0SaHKWMtmmnnnVavImPkV7AIN2lCinaDiLyf0dDtrDtfDvawlyWtJwxx3gAi3cJVnZvsDA5hkxDPRY/s320/shirt+collar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
</div>
except buttonholes. The
sewing machine had gone <i>muffed up</i> - number 2 son speak for <i>broken</i>.
How frustrating because as much as I wanted to give it to him, I wanted to blog
about it. <o:p></o:p>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Two weeks and two trips to
the sewing machine shop later, I finished the shirt and here it is.</div>

Ages ago I bought 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet from Amazon or a some other tax avoiding corporation, shame on me, and made an anemone. I thought it would look perfect on a hat. So when I sorted out my bag of things to finish at the beginning of January, I found this <a href="http://oceanofstitches.blogspot.co.uk/2009/09/basic-roll-brim-beanie-pattern.html">pattern</a> and after two attempts made a beanie.<br />
I made the adult rather than the large adult because I'm not a hat person and I thought it would be just the thing for my friend, Lindsey. On the first attempt it came out too small. The instructions say 30 rounds before decrease but it was more like a little cap than a beanie. Of course this may well be down to me choosing wrong needles the wrong wool and not knitting a test square. Or indeed, having a very big head! I undid all the decreases which had gone a bit wrong anyway because I didn't use a marker and knitted 20 more rounds. I was grateful for the pattern, I didn't mind a bit.<br />
<br />

Seems manageable to me, one block a month that forces me away from my usual easy peasy 9 square 4x4 block quilt. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ok it's the first of February and I've only started the practice block for December but I have finished this...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
A quilt number from number two son's discarded t-shirts because they're too baggy after a year and a term living off peanut butter and pasta. I didn't have many to play with, the middle block isn't a t-shirt at all, just an appliquéd star framing three cool labels rescued from the bin.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mMGN59Tq3hZiZMosmGN_cqDT2WYLtbESmhorLbakHS6rgU8IRI5b81c2fLC2DjGRe8kTB7qq4qYCRWK_J3Udr17XkysgvyIT2pT19HkdtkPxYBKZoddf1KityGMKv1JuevqwVbHva0o/s1600/sam%2527s+quilt+star+cropped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="309" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1mMGN59Tq3hZiZMosmGN_cqDT2WYLtbESmhorLbakHS6rgU8IRI5b81c2fLC2DjGRe8kTB7qq4qYCRWK_J3Udr17XkysgvyIT2pT19HkdtkPxYBKZoddf1KityGMKv1JuevqwVbHva0o/s320/sam%2527s+quilt+star+cropped.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've now saved most of the off cuts, could I shred them for stuffing?<br />
The metallic fabric was strangely tricky to sew. I've used it loads of times before for wacky trousers but this time, the machine wasn't happy. I tried different needles and defluffing but I'd still have only the odd stitch in a row of holes and some loose threads. It was better when the fabric sandwich included t- shirt or fleece or the fine needlecord I used for the star. The backing is tartan fleece and the binding the rocket fabric from my first post.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0C0k7oPdKY6Z07ZnodaeNdA9gXy_VMcAIwZqxIc6-nZFW6xHgbxg92sHhb4tnymLaIsWDwEfobtyqkQl7MR8oDEICTWGM54jg5wDl0mJQgnNXO6xa6L4OM6ZDkxH1O00zlRdurqg0KsI/s1600/sam's+quilt+fleece+and+bininding.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0C0k7oPdKY6Z07ZnodaeNdA9gXy_VMcAIwZqxIc6-nZFW6xHgbxg92sHhb4tnymLaIsWDwEfobtyqkQl7MR8oDEICTWGM54jg5wDl0mJQgnNXO6xa6L4OM6ZDkxH1O00zlRdurqg0KsI/s320/sam's+quilt+fleece+and+bininding.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
I was quite pleased with myself until I googled 't-shirt quilt' and found hundreds of examples. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/ladykat81/1464209592/" target="_blank">Here's</a> is one of my favourites, made from some brilliant <a href="http://beta.threadless.com/" target="_blank">Threadless</a> designs. Those are still on his back!<br />

Along with my 52 makes I'm also going to attempt to clear my back log of <i>half</i> makes from the last ten years. As I've been in the swing of cowls and you can knit these plain ones while reading the subtitles on the DVD of The Killing you gave your other half for Christmas, this was the obvious choice.<br />
<br />
The other half gave me the bamboo tape ages ago, just 2 balls for inspiration with a pattern book of elegant stuff that would have taken me decades.<br />

For the cowl, at the time the extent of my ambition, I cast on 92 stitches on a 5mm/40cm circular needle. I think I had a pattern to begin with, which must have been where I found out about hems (knit 6 - 9 rounds or so stocking stitch, purl one round, turn up and knit about the same number of rounds again and join. (I really wished I'd watched <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwg39l-3Kn0" target="_blank">this</a> before I started.) I loosely oversewed my hems on this one, not great but ok.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6sbDDPsAv7jMmYsq-cCCx_RMGnl93ltn6MM0jZy5NYqIZ8pz-F4yiqOpLylbwmBJ-Hv7LiAS8GCkyzfXI2eRIDDfNqVyhZ93NoCiixn8SOkzLarBTCHpNIKmy-w8xbQOAzXaAnQBH-g4/s1600/flower+cowl+flat.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6sbDDPsAv7jMmYsq-cCCx_RMGnl93ltn6MM0jZy5NYqIZ8pz-F4yiqOpLylbwmBJ-Hv7LiAS8GCkyzfXI2eRIDDfNqVyhZ93NoCiixn8SOkzLarBTCHpNIKmy-w8xbQOAzXaAnQBH-g4/s320/flower+cowl+flat.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I crocheted the flowers which approximately resemble the buttercup from <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Flowers-Knit-Crochet-Lesley-Stanfield/dp/1844484033/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1359029280&sr=1-1" target="_blank">100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet by Lesley Stansfield</a>, leaving enough ends to secure them in this neat little line along the edge.<br />
<br />
The bamboo is so soft and the flowers work surprisingly well! I'm pleased.<br />

I had to wait, but in the end I made three. The first was for number one son for Christmas so isn't counting for this blog but the other two were for some great friends who are just perfect for this sort thing.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQv1j7edsRBUlhwTRQOBPRo2X-1TBJJRQ4Je7YHQMuvKe1CJ0cnL5VHan23BYtFwFwDeowT8w-5vtQ7gvXo9Jlqq8tGSYO7s5pgywYflzUouBOXzDveYiWFLW70Kdq8S1Wbu8nr6DYPHk/s1600/incognito+cowls.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQv1j7edsRBUlhwTRQOBPRo2X-1TBJJRQ4Je7YHQMuvKe1CJ0cnL5VHan23BYtFwFwDeowT8w-5vtQ7gvXo9Jlqq8tGSYO7s5pgywYflzUouBOXzDveYiWFLW70Kdq8S1Wbu8nr6DYPHk/s320/incognito+cowls.jpg" width="303" /></a></div>
<div>
I used Rowan Creative Focus, worsted weight, which is <i>almost</i> the right wool. The chunky acrylic in my stash was absolutely the <i>wrong</i> wool. The Rowan is a little too fluffy so number one son is bringing his back for a small cotton mouth patch to be sewn inside under the 'tache. (Hu and Su, the same amendment is on offer for yours.)</div>
<div>
The pattern says to change needles from the hem to the main body of the cowl - I forgot but it doesn't seem to be too dire a mistake. After the first attempt, when I <i>did </i>remember to change to the smaller needles, it seemed too small. So I unravelled (love that word) and reknitted with an extra 10 stitches for the smaller adult and an extra 20 for the larger.</div>
<div>
I loved doing the swiss darned 'taches, once I'd got a rhythm going to the stitching and the wool was a joy to knit. I couldn't quite get the hang of of the <a href="http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall05/FEATfall05TT.html" target="_blank">provisional cast on </a>for the tangy version but I cast on loosely in my usual way and improvised by turning up and using cast on loops as edge stitches. I forgot to take a photo of that before I gave them away but trust me, it looked quite neat. </div>

I'm going to make time for <i>making - </i>something new every week which makes 52 objects in 52 weeks? Lets see how far I get.<br />
I'm a slapdash, gung-ho sort of crafter so I couldn't do those wonderful 'how to' posts that lots of sewists and yarnists do but I will post the results.<br />

In this inaugural post, 10 minutes before I have to leave for work - that's another NY <i>hope</i> - resolution is such a strong word - here are the trousers I made for number two son. I've made loads of these in all kinds fabrics including silver with flashing LEDS down each leg. But for number son, this week, it's rockets. They took a couple of hours while I was watching the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poldark">Poldark</a> DVD I had for Christmas - perfect sewing viewing.<br />
